Description
Imported
Purchased at auction, Nova Scotia artist carved with glass eyes 1980. Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. C. 1980. Polychromed wood, pine base. A smaller scale work by folk artist Collins Eisenhauer; one of many that very rarely come to market. Here is a carving of an owl, painted white with yellow and black eyes and black legs and feet. The owl is perched on a natural tree branch in black and mounted to a rectangular black-painted pine base also made by the artist's hand. Signed, "Collins Eisenhauer", on bottom of base. 10.75" x 4.25" x 3.5". From the Susan Murray Collection. Collins Eisenhauer (1898-1979) was as a primitive artist hailing from Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. After retiring in 1964, he embarked on a second career as a sculptor, starting with painted wooden carvings of geese, water birds, and people displayed on his lawn. Eisenhauer remained undiscovered until the early 1970s when antique dealers noticed his sculptures. Initially, he used the name "Collins Eisener" for privacy, but upon catching the attention of Chris Huntington, a prominent figure in Nova Scotia folk art, he adopted "Collins Eisenhauer." His work evolved to encompass topical and classical themes, often inspired by classical narratives, reflecting society's attitudes. His legacy endures in esteemed institutions like the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Museum of Civilization, as well as private collections worldwide.
